Sustainable Retirement Living

“Sustainability is so much more than just going "green". It is a purposeful way of life, with a strong focus on our wellbeing, health and community, as well as looking after the environment.

We all have a role to play in building resilience in this changing world.

Two villages, Pacific Coast and Pacific Lakes, in the Bay have embraced sustainable retirement living. The unique close proximity of the two sister villages has allowed them to explore some innovative regional solutions to key areas.

A considerable effort has been made in the area of waste - looking at ways to eliminate waste from daily operations, as well as constantly striving to make better choices for the environment.

Pacific Lakes Village is the first Generus Living village with a sustainable approach to design. The village has its own ecosystem, via a series of waterways, fed from rainwater and natural aquifers that will support the regeneration of plant and birdlife.

Its architecturally designed community facility, the Lake House, is currently under construction and will operate off the grid with its own solar power and rainwater recycling systems.

In addition, the village will feature a glasshouse, climate-controlled growing house and a variety of fruit trees. Each residence has their own raised garden beds enabling residents to grow
their own produce and worm farms and green waste composting offer a solution to resident household organic waste.

Pacific Lakes recently received a grant from the Tauranga City Council Resource Wise Community Fund, in support of the village sustainability initiatives. The project includes the
establishment of worm farms for residential kitchen waste and green waste composting facilities on-site, complemented by an educational programme for residents.

There are many other eco-friendly features within the village, including homes pre-wired for solar, electric vehicle charging stations and LED lighting.

The village opened its doors to its first residents in November last year with more residents moving in over the past few months.

With its range of housing options, Pacific Lakes Village has the ambience of a luxurious lakeside resort. Some of the villas are stand-alone and some duplex, and come with a choice of a single or double garage. Each villa features two bedrooms and two bathrooms, and some have a study.

Village Manager Mark Vincent says there has been a high level of interest in the village locally, including people with an interest in sustainability.

“They have seen the high standard of housing and facilities at our sister village, Pacific Coast, and know that we are an organisation that can deliver quality.

“As well as those looking to make a positive lifestyle change, the ecofriendly features of the village have attracted people with a desire to look after the environment.”

The village’s proximity to beaches and shopping centres has also been a drawcard, as well as the thoughtful layout and design.

The Lake House is currently under construction and will feature an indoor activity area, sweeping deck and covered entertaining area. Adjacent to The Lake House will be the International Greenweave
Bowling Green.

Other facilities will include The Pavilion, the village’s main community hub featuring a café, bar and lounge. There will also be a library, arts and crafts
studio and an expansive entertainment centre for resident functions, events and fitness classes.
